The disembodied hands are the results of the Hand Witch's curse, where she takes the target's hands from them. The Hand Witch can control the hands as well.

History

In "Little Gift Shop of Horrors" story "Hands Off", Stan's hands are removed by the Hand Witch due to a curse that desends upon him for stealing one of the gold watches she was selling at the swap meet. Dipper, Mabel, and Stan travel to Hand Witch Mountain to negotiate: on entering the witch's lair, the disembodied hands first poke, then swarm upon the Pines family; one pair of hands can be seen playing with, then beating Mabel at Rock, Paper, Scissors before attacking her.

Once the witch appears, the hands arrange themselves into a throne for her, and are seen braiding Mabel's hair. They participate in Mabel's home makeover, moving furniture and painting the walls.

After the story ends, the hand that Stan had been holding scampers away, showing the story actually happened, and was not made up.

In "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape From Reality," a disembodied hand is seen running in the street during the cold open.

Appearance

The disembodied hands are, as their name implies, hands without bodies. Some of them have five fingers while others have four fingers and they are in various shades of green. They move about on their fingers like spiders, and are capable of walking on vertical walls. They can also jump great heights and float. While they move independently, they are capable of functioning as a group and functioning in pairs, as evidenced by the hands that played Rock, Paper, Scissors with Mabel and by the ones that braided her hair. The hands also appear to be sentient, reacting to the things Mabel, Stan and the witch say, expressing their emotions via gestures, like thumbs up and high fives.

The hand Stan was showing off to the unnamed traveler has a wrist bone sticking out of it.

Trivia

  • Although the story "Hands Off" is considered non-canonic, the hand that Stan shows to the tourist at the Gift Shop does actually come to life. Moreover, one of them is seen in "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape From Reality," which is a canonic episode.
